PS3 is the dominant console ... in 2012
IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon predicts that the "romance of the three consoles" will continue for another four years with the PlayStation 3 finally pulling ahead in the year 2012. It looks like the Xbox 360 will stagnate over the rest of its life cycle while the Wii will continue to lead the charge with Nintendo first party products and a legion of shovelware. Considering that the PS3 still has a strong set of familiar megaton exclusive titles yet to release (Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy XIII), while its competitors have already drained their back catalogs, there isn't any real wonder why the PS3 would end up on top. The real question is why is it going take so long?Patrick Seybold, director of corporate communications for SCEA explains, "There were two main barriers to entry [to the PS3] for consumers: cost and content, [but] we have addressed both of those." Indeed, the PS3 price cut made last year's sales shoot through the roof. New content including retro franchises and new IP will be popping up on the console very soon. Even so, we believe Sony's dominance in that time frame has more to do with longevity rather than anything else. The PS3 is a machine designed to last ten years, but are the Wii and the 360 built this way? Microsoft launched the 360 only four years after the first Xbox; if history repeats, then by 2012 Microsoft would have already shifted their focus onto a new toy. Meanwhile, the Wii and its focus on the casual market might not really last that long. Casual gamers are called "casual" for a reason. Over all, we can see these predictions coming true, though we picture the PS3 taking over slightly ahead of schedule.[NintendoWiiFanboy] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Not really it was confirmed by microsoft that the kinect has been introduce to prolong the 360's life for another 4-5 years and with the amount of pubkishers that are going on board especially with japan developers such as Suda 51 and capcom's Resi guys the future looks very bright and forecast sales already predict by the end of January that the Kinect would have outsold move.
The PS3 is in for the long haul and no doubt will still do well but it is not so much plain sailing now between the consoles.
Who would of predicted that Wii would be the biggest selling console of all time, still miles ahead sony and microsoft. Especially when it was laughed at when it was first introduced.
I think PS3 will fail overall in the motion technology thing but with the 3D tech up it's sleeve it will beat the other two hands down.
All three giants will have a healthy future but that prediction is slightly off in all fairness.
Have to agree with that write up Bilbo.. I think each console will rule as one area or so.

Great points well made Bilbo and I'm not trying to start a console war, lol. But this sentence struck me in particular:-
Microsoft launched the 360 only four years after the first Xbox; if history repeats, then by 2012 Microsoft would have already shifted their focus onto a new toy.
Has stated all ready by Microsoft with the introduction of Kinect, it's like having a new console.
But with 12 months to go before 2012 it will be very interesting to see where we are in 2012
I don't see Kinect as any different to Move really - just an additional accessory.
The PS3 needs to come down in price more to get a bigger market share.
I think Xbox's price, exclusives and Live will see it keep up there.

I think it will all depend on the software for Kinect and Move next year to decide which will be more successful

The one thing that has made me laugh is the people going on about the price of a kinect (especially PS3 fanboys).
But if they look at the move to have multiplayer fun it cost even more than Kinect.
Fact is you won't see a new console from microsoft for at least the next three years, PS3 will become the hardcore gamers of choice with the 3D tech and the best exclusives. Nintendo will still be the family generated form of choice and Microsoft will still be the leaders of online gaming and motion control.
It's a win-win scenario for everyone.
We should all be excited for the future as I think the three big boys will not try and out do each other but try and exploit the strengths that they already have in their own markets and deliver some amazing experiences for gamers over the next few years.
The future is bright, the future is gaming.

Too right, what with the exclusives coming out on all 3 consoles and the multi-platform releases as well there as never been a better time to be a gamer no matter what your console of choice is, I may even treat myself to a new Xbox 360 in the new year cuz my 20gb is on it's last legs and won't run any longer than 5 minutes without overheating.
Sony have underestimated the importance of multiplayer gaming and having a strong online experience. It is this basic mistake plus the high cost of the PS3 that has held them back.
Having looked at 3D in a tv show-room I think it is over-rated and has a picture quality far below the better 2D televisions. 3D has a long way to go before it becomes essential.
Move and kinect will change very little. It's the core gaming experience that matters in the long run. That and great exclusive games are what really sell consoles.

I've got both consoles and personall believe the PS3 to be a far superior machine in everyway. That being said i packed my PS3 up and came back to the 360 for the online aspect of it. Online is where the 360 is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition, and everyone else is playing catch up.
Move, Kinect. I own both, both will sell shed loads, and i won't even begin to try and compare them as they are totally different, it would be like comparing my wife with Keira Knightley.
I've said before and will continue to follow my route of the 360 until the day that the PS3 gets it act together online.
And beside 2012 will be the PS3's year ? Utter rubbish, don't you know the worlds ending in 2012 ?

I think it has been said amply well above that both the 360 and the PS3 will have their own share of the gaming market and the exclusives for each I am sure will be great. I don't think anyone can disagree that the Microsoft Live set-up and cross game voice comms is streets ahead of the PSN offering but if and when Sony bridge that gap then the decision for new gamers will be more difficult if online gaming is their thing.
In my opinion, and if you can afford it, then having BOTH consoles is a win-win scenario. This gives you the choice of getting the exclusives (if you want to) for either console, and as each company, Microsoft and Sony, further improve their offerings, then it is us the gamer who benefits from this healthy competition, and it is this competition between the two giants of gaming1 that will continue to drive the research into better physics, graphics and sounds and ultimately the games we love so much.
1. No I haven't forgotten about Nintendo but I don't consider them in the same hardcore gaming league as Microsoft and Sony.
