STILL not up and working!.
latest news ....here, LINKY!!!! (http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/05/04/playstation-network-status-psn-not-back-up-firmware-update-3-61-coming/)

We have an update on the PlayStation Network Online Status to give you now. Sadly, it isn’t the news that the service is back online, but we do know that users will be prompted to install a new firmware update on the PS3 as soon as it is back up.
There were previous rumors of a new firmware update coming soon to the PS3, and this has now been confirmed to be firmware update 3.61 as stated on the Japanese PlayStation website, as reported from TerminalGamer. Through the magic of Google Translate, we’ve learned that users will also need to change their password once they have signed into PSN.
Despite previous rumors stating otherwise, the Japanese PS site also states that PSN is still offline in Japan and that the service ‘will resume soon’. You can read the translated text in full here if you’re interested.
This information has yet to be posted on the US or EU PlayStation Blogs, so perhaps Sony is intending to switch PSN back online first in Japan, followed by other regions. Aside from the much talked about compensation package that Sony are offering to PS3 users, we hope that firmware 3.61 adds some extra functionality to the XMB – cross game chat support would be a lovely way of saying sorry, what do you think?
So to sum up, the PSN is still down, but you will get a nice new firmware to play around with when it does finally return. Let us know your thoughts on this.

look's like it'll be up the end of the week now :/

According to a statement from Sony, which held a press conference regarding the recent shut down on the companies online gaming site, they expect to have the Playstation network back online for users by the end of this week. The network was shut down in the wake of hacking attacks against the company which led to the theft of credit card and bank account information of former customers. In response to the break-in, and to give the company more time to improve security, Sony shut down the Sony Online Entertainment site which allows online gamers to play games with each other over the internet using their Playstation 3 consoles as well as through Facebook.
During the press conference in Japan today, Sony executive Kazuo Hirai told gaming customers that that they would be able to enjoy their online games by Friday of this week and apologized for the down time.
The improvements to the site will require Sony PlayStation 3 customers to accept a system software update to their console, and will require them to change the password on their accounts as well. These and other internal layers of enhanced security are designed to prevent future breaches of the company’s network and keep customer information safe.

Dear Friends,
I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you.
Let me assure you that the resources of this company have been focused on investigating the entire nature and impact of the cyber-attack we’ve all experienced and on fixing it. We are absolutely dedicated to restoring full and safe service as soon as possible and rewarding you for your patience. We will settle for nothing less.
To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely. We are also moving ahead with plans to help protect our customers from identity theft around the world. A program for U.S. PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers that includes a $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user was launched earlier today and announcements for other regions will be coming soon.
As we have announced, we will be offering a “Welcome Back” package to our customers once our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are up and running. This will include, among other benefits, a month of free PlayStation Plus membership for all PSN customers, as well as an extension of subscriptions for PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited customers to make up for time lost.
As a company we — and I — apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack. Under the leadership of Kazuo Hirai, we have teams working around the clock and around the world to restore your access to those services as quickly, and as safely, as possible.
I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It’s a fair question. As soon as we discovered the potential scope of the intrusion, we shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and hired some of the best technical experts in the field to determine what happened. I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had — or had not — been taken.
As a result of what we discovered we notified you of the breach. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are upgrading our security so that if attacks like this happen again, our defenses will be even stronger.
In the last few months, Sony has faced a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But now we are facing a very man-made event – a criminal attack on us — and on you — and we are working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world to apprehend those responsible.
In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony.
With best regards,
Howard Stringer

Today our global network and security teams at Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment began the final stages of internal testing of the new system, an important step towards restoring PlayStation Network and Qriocity services.

As previously mentioned, we’ve been working around the clock to rebuild the network and enhance protections of your personal data. It’s our top priority to ensure your data is safe when you begin using the services again.

We understand that many of you are eager to again enjoy the PlayStation Network and Qriocity entertainment services that you love, so we wanted you to be aware of this milestone and our progress. We will provide additional updates as soon as we can.

The anger is not so much at lack of service but rather the loss of personal data that could mean identity theft or credit card cloning. If it was just a case of the service being off for repairs or even because it was an honest mistake then people wouldn't be so angry.

Hope it's back up sometime this weekend.

I just had a bit of a thought (dangerous, I know). For those of us that have multiple accounts, UK, US etc. We might be able to get more free stuff, than say those with only a UK account. Just a thought, free stuff is always good, and more free stuff will be even better!

http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2011/05/06/psn-psp-and-ps3-users-to-get-free-games/

Earlier today we brought news (http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2011/05/06/sony-offer-free-id-protection-in-us/) that Sony would be providing a year’s free identity theft insurance to US PSN users in the wake of the recent attacks, and the company have now given a bit of an update on how that will work here in the EU.
Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Nick Caplin, SCEE Head of Communications had this to say:
As I have explained previously, creating a similar [identity theft protection] offering for the many countries within the SCEE region is a very complicated process. Each country has a different way of handling identity theft; some offer relatively sophisticated services whilst others are much more modest.
We are currently in the process of identifying how we manage this situation and once the programme is ready to launch, we will provide details of exactly which services are available in each country and explain how to sign up. We hope to do this early next week.
Caplin also gave a little more information of what exactly will make up the ‘Welcome Back’ package that will go live when the Network returns. PS3 users will be able to choose two games from a list of five, whilst PSP users will be able to choose two from a list of four. It’s unclear if the PS3 games will be full downloads like the ones that have recently begun appearing on the Store, or just the smaller PSN titles, and equally it’s not mentioned if those who own a PS3 and PSP will be entitled to both offers, a choice between them, or a mix of the two. The package has previously been confirmed to include a free 30 days of PlayStation Plus and extensions to Plus and Qriocity subscriptions.

As far as when the Network itself will be back up, Caplin gave no further information: “Please be assured that we are continuing to work around the clock to have some PlayStation Network and Qriocity services restored and will provide you with specific details shortly.” The last we heard, the plan was to get limited access online by the end of this week.

I hope it is not back down again straight away next week !

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation (http://www.cnet.com/ps3.html) Network breach.
An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.
Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations (http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20058617-260.html)by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General (http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20060117-260.html), a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.
Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites (http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-20051482-245.html), including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information (http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20057577-260.html) of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.
Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" (http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-20059737-245.html)containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline.
Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20060033-17.html) in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said.
Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It's not looking too good for this weekend.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/05/07/service-restoration-update/

As you may know, we’ve begun the process (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/05/06/important-step-for-service-restoration/) of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.
As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects.
When we held the press conference in Japan last week (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/05/01/some-playstation-network-and-qriocity-services-to-be-available-this-week/), based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.

hopefully by the weekend then!!

Following a statement made by SCEA’s director of corporate communications and social media, Patrick Seybold, earlier today, we had feared that the PlayStation Network could be offline for at least another few weeks, but it seems it might be up and running sooner than expected.

Seybold has now posted on the official PlayStation Blog with a short statement that tells us the PSN is likely to be back online in only a few more days. “I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored,” posts Seybold. “At this time, I can’t give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process.”

Sony has assured PSN users that the service will be fully secure before it risks bringing it back online. “Let me assure you that the resources of this company have been focused on investigating the entire nature and impact of the cyber-attack we’ve all experienced and on fixing it,” said Sony’s CEO Howard Stringer recently. “We are absolutely dedicated to restoring full and safe service as soon as possible and rewarding you for your patience. We will settle for nothing less.”

The PlayStation Network has now been offline for over three weeks.
